Glad to know it works well. I've had one for about 5 years. Only problem is, I've never used it. Was about to sell it, but I guess I'll keep it... I've grown up in the Sierra Nevada and have never filtered, and never got sick... Knock on wood...
Hope you had a great trip. What day did you summit?

I have an older Sweetwater (now known as MSR Sweetwater) that I've used for 10 years. I've considered the HikerPro, and after your fantastic review, I think I am sold.

Excellent review. Thanks.

I still prefer to carry the lighter and less bulky SteriPen with Aqua Mira as backup. Great review though.
Thanks

My first filter was a Miniworks. I thought it too heavy so I went to a Steripen. Then I saw a Sawyer 0.1 micron filter at Wal-Mart that looked interesting. I made up a gravity system using a platypus 3 liter dirty water bag. I filter directly to my hydration bladder. I added a small Katadyn charcoal post filter for chemical removal. The best testimony for the Sawyer isn't anything that I can say for it. Instead, it's the fact that whenever I hike with others, they've all ended up borrowing my setup. The big draw is the fact that after hanging from a tree branch, it doesn't require any effort at all; no pumping, no stirring. I've never timed it, but I get three liters in five minutes. Five minutes I spend reading, cooking or any of the myriad things I need to do every day on the trail.

Bob said...

Jason, just curious why you choose a pump system rather than a gravity filter?

I use the Platypus gravity works, which filters 1.75 L/min @ 0.2 microns and weighs 10.6 oz. Hey, that 0.4 oz lighter than the Katadyn without all that pumping work.

Jason Klass said...

Marty,

You should try it, I think you'd like it!

Bob,

I used my gravity filter last time I was on Whitney but really wanted water on demand this time. The extra weight was acceptable to me for the convenience and this filter is very easy to pump (unlike my Miniworks). It didn't feel like "work" at all. In fact, I gladly filled up my hiking partner's water bottles as well as a passing hiker who ran out of water on the way back down to trail camp.

I did a lot of research before purchasing my Katadyn Hiker Pro filter and have never regretted it. Once again you've done a fantastic job of putting into words how I've felt about this product.

I have a Hiker Pro I take when my kids walk with me or sources are questionable. Otherwise, I usually just use Aqua Mira. I never rush a walk so I can wait.

Unknown said...

Thanks for the review. I still prefer a DIY gravity filter and a Steripen. We got quick water with the Steripen and a good gravity set-up as a back-up and to make bulk water at camp. Split among 2 people, it is a great system. I never go alone, so I don't know what I would do by myself, I guess it depends on the location.

ATVCamper said...

Good review. I decided on the Katadyn Base Camp gravity filter because I like the simplicity of it with no mechanical parts to fail. It uses the same filter as the Hiker Pro. I have used it on three trips so far and it has worked great.

mike said...

I live in the northeast I tend to like on demand water. I have an older Hiker Pro, that has been awesome over the years. Just keep it lubed and somewhat clean and its good to go. Lubing the pump is the key to easy pumping in my opinion.

That sound perverted... :(

Anyways I could make due with tablets, but its just easier to have a filter when you're with multiple people.

ATVCamper -- I have one of those Katadyn Base Camp gravity filters. Failed at the connection of plastic collar to bag after the first trip. Just thought I'd mention it.

Good review thanks. Saving weight is always good. Will be sure to look them up.

Jon Heller said...

I've used the tablets and a MSR Miox but neither of them stand up to my Hiker Pro. The taste is great and I prefer not to see the various floaters in my water cause no matter how much you try if your not filtering you still get those in the jug.

This gear is important especially if you want to avoid problems with hydration or stay away from the idea of running out of clean water.

I've been using a Hiker Pro for years and love the convenience.

My only gripes are the rating (I've never gotten near the 200 gallon rating, probably average about 20-30 gallons) and the price of replacement cartridges. Paying $40 for a replacement when a new one is $60 is hard to take.

Its always good to have a water filter when hiking deep into the wilderness. I think I may get me one of these!

Nice Review, I have the MSR MiniWorks, I wish I'd seen this before I brought mine. One thing to note is that the manufactures weights are always off. You could shave a few Oz. off the Miniworks by modifying the intake. I normally weigh mine down with a rock anyway. I believe the Katadyn Hiker pro has been updated since I looked at it, because it is now 11Oz. One thing that made me decide on the Miniworks over the Hiker Pro was the handle, I'd read many reviews of the HikerPro's handle breaking. The MSR seemed like if the handle broke, you could still "bushcraft" it back into service. If I had to buy a filter again, I'd go for the HyperFlow, or a gravity filter.

I have attempted almost every water filtration device and dependably return to the Katadyn Hiker Pro.My first water filter was the antecedent to this filter a Pure Hiker. Why do I utilize it? Basically on the grounds that it meets expectations.I attempted the MSR Miox filter which obliged a 45 moment hold up after utilization and included a chlorine taste.I attempted two versions of the Steripen and both fizzled in midstream,so to talk, leaving me without a friend in the world. While it ways some more, the accommodation of having the capacity to snare snappy disengage hoses to a bladder in my pack and simply pump and go is awesome.I'm advised I don't have to change the filter until it obstructs and I'm not able to pump however that never appears to happen.I trek in the Pacific Northwest and most times I feel I could drink water without any sort of filtration (and oft times do) so I'm not excessively worried about the micron size of the Katadyn filter.I'll utilize it until Katadyn turns out with a move up to this filter.
