North Face Recon Backpack Review
Last Sunday, I bought my 3rd North Face Recon Backpack. The Recon has always been my favorite multi-sport pack and every year, they seem to dial it in a little more to make it even better. Here's a quick video review of some of the latest features I like.

I needed a new multi-purpose/everyday backpack for work, carry-on, day hikes and the like - timely review so thanks. Problem solved.
That's great Maz. I hope you have an easier time finding the color you want than I did. I had to go to 3 different stores to find it in green. The Recon comes in some pretty outrageous colors and I just wanted something subdued. I would have ordered it online but I need a carry on for a trip I'm taking tomorrow so I didn't have a lot of time. Good luck and enjoy the Recon. It's an outstanding pack!
Ordered this morning in black for a very reasonable £55. Thanks again Jason.
Great review and quick video. How big is the actual bag? Seems like this bag is perfect for multi-purpose every day trips.
Thanks for sharing!

Nice review.
While not a fan of North Face packs in general, I picked the Recon up at a NF Outlet for $55 and have found it to be a good value. It's worked well on some day hikes as well as for travel.
I agree on the stiff straps on the older model, as well as some of the strange zipper placement. Still, it feels solid and can hold a lot. It's now my primary day pack, while my Osprey Kestrel is used for overnight trips.
Overall, I recommend the North Face Recon.
The Recon backpack is solid, I have one and it is pretty worn out now, I'll probably get another one. North Face puts out some really good durable packs, I would recommend to anyone.
I have yet to find the perfect day pack, although the Recon looks like a good one. I currently use the Osprey Stratos 24 because I like the Airspeed suspension which holds the pack away from the back for excellent ventilation and comfort. It also has a hiking pole carrying system that allows attachment on the fly which I find simple and effective. I wish it had a front mesh pocket though. http://www.rei.com/product/796730/osprey-stratos-24-pack
I was in the market for a new hiking bag. I was going to invest some money into a Kelty (don't like their straps) or maybe a Camelbak. Then I remembered you did this video. I found the same color on sale with free shipping. So thank you for the review. I am sure I will love the bag.
Very cool Izzy. I hope it works out for you as well as it did for me!
Nice review, thank you for sharing. It's been on my wishlist to buy a day pack and an MSR hydromedary bag. I keep putting it off because I want a day pack that's "just right". Oddly enough, my Camelbak doesn't have that stretchy loop for the hydration tube, why didn't they think of that?
You bought three of the same day packs? Over what time period? Seems like a bit of a waste IMHO . . . $55 x3 and you could have bought a better pack once. Haven't really been a fan of TNF for about 15 years now. They're more fashion than functional.
Have you ever checked-out Kifaru back packs? There in Wheatridge, CO. It was started by Patrick Smith of Mountainsmith fame. They have three different pack lines; hunting, military and ultralight. The ultralight packs are new and definitely worth a look.
Take care
Hi Jason. Do you use the Kestrel 32 that you had last year? Or if you prefer the Recon, can you highlight what you feel is better about it?
Thanks.
Aaron
I have used a MEC Flux 2 28 daypack for about 18 months now. Mostly I use it as a daypack, but I also use it for a carry-on, and wearing skiing. I like that it is an organized pack, it has good sized pockets, folders and a netbook fits perfectly in the internal pocket. Other features: waterproof YKK zippers, two compression straps that can be stowed, unbeatable price, and many more. Cheers, Mark
