The FireSteel.com GobSpark Armageddon FireSteel

As an amateur pyromaniac, I'm always on the lookout for new fire steels.  I recently got a Gobspark Armageddon Fire Steel and am impressed with it's performance.  While it's a little bigger and heavier than others, it truly lives up to it's name by raining down fire and brimstone mercilessly on helpless tinder.  If I were going somewhere where I would be using a fire steel as my primary method for lighting stoves or fires, this is the one I would want to have with me (especially in rainy conditions).  Here's a quick video comparing it to another popular fire steel:

What do you carry for a fire steel these days?

I thought you were carrying the Exotac. Is there a reason you switched to the LMF? I was tempted to get one but it just seemed too pricey to me. Following Tinny's logic, I carry a mini-bic, with another mini-bic in a ziploc bag as a back up.

Nice find. I am still carrying my LMF Scout model, but have wanted to try the Exotac...

Since I started using alky stoves I have used the fire steel exclusively. And I must say, when lighting my stove (White Box Stove) I do in fact pull the steel away and leave the striker in place. Like you said, I am less likely to knock a potentially flaming fuel source over by doing it this way. But, I have never said that one way is the right way. I am with you on this one, what ever works for you to get the job done is the right way. Although, with the Gob Fire Steel, it looks like it would be more natural to strike it by flicking the striker against the rod simply because of the way the steel is held between your fingers...

It would be intressting to see whats happens if you try the striker from the Gobspark on the LMF firesteel. Does the striker makes a difference? :)

Thanks for the the video

"FireSteel.Com" is a great site! They have many interesting fire steals... I like the ones in the metal tubes with the extra paracord added.
I keep one of their mini 2" fire steals in a keychain back-up survival kit I put together and keep a P38 can opener with it for the striker.

My main fire steal carry these days is the one from TOPS Knives and it works well.

Seems to be a higher magnesium content in the Gobspark.

I have the Armagedon as well. It is hands down the best around...and cost the same as smaller wimpy firesteels. Just for kicks I have a real Flint & Steel striker. Lots of fun, but requires some skill.

Great Video. I too have a LMF scout. But this one looks like so much more fun.

I might just have to go and order one.

I received the Exotac nanoSTIKER for Christmas and love it so far. I like the amount of spark for the compactness of the tool.

I went on the link to the website you gave and got the ranger that has a paracord handle. It cost 5.99 and weighed 1.0 ounces.

Jason,

Are you wearing a tux while shooting this video. Very "James Bond". :)

I have a retractable wire saw up my sleeve...watch out!

Impressive amount of spark and burning rod. I can easily see this being much easier to start a pile of tinder than the LMF steel. Good video Jason, nice find!
