Altoids Tin Firestarter

This was sent to me by Gear Talk reader Ryan Hussain.  It's a pretty unique idea and certainly looks like a fun DIY gear project.  I think it could also spark (yes, I know) ideas for other fire starter designs. Ryan just took rubbing 2 sticks together to a whole new level!  The pictures are pretty self explanatory so I'll let them do the talking.  Thanks Ryan!

pretty cool, a reverse fire saw. Ive made fire using a split piece of bamboo but that is much smaller. I would change one thing. My idea would be to place a small bic lighter in the tin and wa-la fire. lol.

I may need to see a video on this.

I'd love to see a video too. If Ryan doesn't make one, I'll try to after I finish the other 8,000 videos I have planned. ;)

speaking of making videos...Jason, it's been awhile. and where is survivor stud?

More videos are always on the way (including Wolf Mills). I'm just a little overextended at the moment and trying to balance this site and Backpack Flyfishing. Not easy when you're also working a 9-5. :(

Understood...I'm just giving you a hard time. By the way, do you know what the deal is with the Firelite 550. I've been going to backpackinglight.com for 6 months now, but evertime I visit, the 550 is still out of stock. I really like that pot and would love to pick one up.

Actually, I gave up on the Firelite 550 and sold mine. The lid fix was never quite right and I decided that the Snow Peak 600 was the perfect size for me after I started getting good lids made for it. Now, I'm happy with my solo setup.

BPL is frequently out of stock on certain things they do small production runs on but I don't have any info on that. But, I feel their pain. It's not easy to design and produce a niche product like this and break even (let alone turn a small profit). Believe me, I'm going through a similar nightmare right now with a couple of different products.

Sorry for the mega bump, but I'm sorta new to the DIY side of things. Can someone explain how to make this?
