The Perfect Lid for the Snow Peak 600

OK, so I cheated a little on this one. Not exactly DIY but I think I have the ultimate lid for the Snow Peak 600 titanium mug. I might see if I can get another, lighter version made but for now, this is great. If you're a 600 owner, what are you using for a lid?

UPDATE: OK, for those of you who want one, I will be able to sell you one within a week or so. It will be an improved and lighter version with a wooden handle. If you can wait, I'll give you an update a.s.a.p. They're on their way! Also, there will be some slight design modifications including a wooden handle like the ones below. We're trying to make it lighter by using thinner aluminum as well.

Can I put an order in now ? I have not used my old 600 for a while but would if I had that lid.

Jason Klass said...

Hi Martin, yes, I'm talking to him about it. I'll definitely keep you posted.

Looks like the lid off the Vargo Titanium Mug from BackPackingLight.com

Great video! I have a snow peak 600 and I made a lid for it. Though, I used a large plasic thumbtack as the handle for the lid and it melted when I tested the lid while boiling water. If whoever made that for you starts selling them, they'll probably make lots of money because there is a huge market for SP 600 lids with backpackers; I would definately buy one.

SL-
That's weird because if you look at the picture in the video of one of the lids I made from the bottom of a can, I also used a large thumbtack and it didn't melt. Strange.

Hi Jason. Just great. I love the pot but almost never take it because of the lack of a good lid concoction. If you do have some of these made, please count on me to buy one too. Thank you very much.

I want one! How do I go about ordering that from you?

Jason Klass said...

Luke,
I am getting a final proof next week and the first run will probably be ready the week after. I am going to put up a very simple web page with an order form to buy it. Don't worry, I'll make an announcement about it the minute it's ready!

I want one. That's finally convinced me to buy a 600. Good work, Jason!

Nice, jason. I'll be watching for your announcement.

Jason - will you be selling them or Tinny?

I'm super glad your starting to take your websites to the next level! You've made your mark on the backpacking world and it can only get better. Keep up the good work.

If I still lived in Colorado, I'd try and hit you up for some backpacking.

Long Fish Tails,
We will both be selling them. Though they might be different designs.

I really like your design with the strainer holes. Thanks for the response. Though there probably isn't much demand for the 450's. Do you think you'll have those made?

Jason Klass said...

Hi Long Fish Tails,
I think you're right that there probably me much interest in the 450 but I might be able to get you one. You cook in a 450?

Some old guy said...

One thing about the strainer holes, though, Jason, is that they'd be easy for any DIYer to add themselves with a Dremel tool or even a regular drill with a small bit. Leaving them off would allow folks to add 'em if they want 'em, or not, and maybe even make them cheaper...

Jason Klass said...

Some Old Guy,
That's a very good point. Maybe I should offer both. I'm sure there are also people out there who wouldn't want to do it themselves.

Long FishTails said...

Jason - I am buying a 450 the next time I hit up REI in Chicago. It's for one of my ultra compact setups. I want a lid for the 600 also.

Some Old Guy - those holes would be very useful. Why use a Dremel (marring up the fine workmanship) when you can have a higher quality job done?

Some old guy said...

The holes are only particularly useful if you actually cook in your mug. I only use mine for boiling water (with my Klasslite stove most of the time) or drinking tea. I "cook" in a freezer bag.

The holes wouldn't bother me, but I could see someone maybe not wanting them. I've kicked around the idea of cutting a slot to form a sort of pouring spout to make it easier to get the water into the freezer bag and only into the bag...

And even I can drill a little hole without marring aluminum, so it's gotta be easy. :)

Jason Klass said...

Done. I've already got both versions on the way: some with the strainer holes and some with no holes. The people will get what they want!

Some old guy said...

My 600 just came in. Yea.

Was looking at my MSR .85L kettle (yeah, I'm a hopeless gear junkie) last night and noticed something. They've drilled a little hole to be positioned opposite the little spout which lets in a bit of air so it pours smoothly. So a Dremel tool might come in handy for you strainers after all. :)

Jason Klass said...

Yes, I know. The final version of the lid will also have a hole like that. Actually, there are going to be 2 versions: One with the strainer holes, and one without any holes so people can design their own. I did this because some old guy told me too. ;)

P.S. Congratulations on the 600!

Long FishTails said...

Anything that helps you pour smoother will be nice.

"I did this because some old guy told me too. ;)"

Psst. Just between you and me, I'd be careful about listening to that guy.

Thanks for the lids Jason.

For the rest of you, I met with Jason today...he's a great guy to deal with and full of useful information that he was most willing to share. I picked up two lids and I am very pleased. They seem to be quite well constructed and as advertised. I believe that if you get these lids you will be very happy with them, but I'd suggest getting extras for your buddies because they're going to want them too!
