Taking Notes While Backpacking

Waterproof Notebooks for Backpacking

I don't regularly journal or make detailed notes while hiking or backpacking but this duo is nice to have in case you need it, is light, and takes up very little space. What do you carry (if anything at all)?

Just a heads up...the video is listed as private.

Sorry guys. I think I fixed it now. Please try again.

Yep, now it works. I bet the new intro prohibited it from being publicized... Just kidding!

To quote, "Yep, it seems like it works pretty well."

I love it!

I just found your blog through thesocksite. At the moment, the writing implements and notepad I've included in the pre-equipped packs I sell are very basic, partly to keep costs down, but I may seriously consider switching to the Fisher Space Pen and the pad you've reviewed, especially for the SARpack for Search & Rescue, because we're always taking notes and writing down coordinates. Thanks for the review. I'll be following your blog.

I've been carrying a Rite in the Rain Journal and pencil on all my trips. Sure, it's a bit bigger, but it works for me.

I also have several Moleskins stashed in my pack and EDC.

great post! I'll have to look into that combo for trail notes. I keep meaning to write some gear modifications, myog ideas, notes on how the gear is working along the trail, but hadn't found a lightweight solution yet... By the time I normally get back to the car I've forgotten half the ideas...

Jared,
I do the same thing. I always say I'll make notes about what worked and what didn't when I get home but I never do. It's best to do them on the trail while your successes and failures are still fresh in your mind.

You know what the say, Jason -- NASA spent millions to develop a pen that would write in zero gee, the Russians used a pencil.

I use one of those Moleskine 64-page journals and a Pilot Precise V5 extra fine stored in a ziplock baggie.

I always carry a pencil and a small moleskin booklet to record anything that may come up or just notes about which trails I took.

I find it quite useful months later when I look back.

I take a small digital recorder for notes while hiking and backpacking. Lives in my shorts pocket. I can record quick thoughts without stopping or taking my eyes off the trail. My several-year-old Olympus DS-330 weights 75 gm with alkaline batteries.

In LP mode I've taken all the notes I wanted over a 10 day trip.

When I get home, I transcribe the notes and relive some of the sounds of the trip, too.

There might be lighter recorders on the market by now.
